On October 25, HEAL Link, project partner of PATTERN, held a workshop on research data management in the frame of the 30th Panhellenic Academic Libraries Conference in Athens. The workshop was attended by 20 people that had the chance to hear an introduction to RDM and to get to know about the forthcoming training “PATTERN- Quickstart to Open Science”.
The workshop was designed to engage the participants in discussions and to raise their concerns about the RDM practices. Several exercises enabled them to relate their existing practices with standard ones, as well as to state on which RDM stage they feel more confident or not. Many attendees said that they feel confident and knowledgeable to plan and organize RDM procedures, as well as to collect and gather data. On the other side, planning is also consuming a lot of their effort, together with the stage of storing and preserving data.
The participants raised questions about the introduction of the RDM in Greece and how the cultural conditions prohibit its wide adoption. They further highlighted the need to integrate the Research Data Repository HARDMIN with other tools, such as the DMP tool Argos, to address the real needs of the community. Several attendees highlighted the role of libraries in RDM and how close it is to the core of their services, giving the opportunity to highlight best practices such as the RDM support webpage that the John S. Baily Library of the ACG provides. They showed great interest in the forthcoming training courses of PATTERN, which will also discuss the topic of Open Access.
The workshop was evaluated by the participants following the guidelines of the ZSI project partner gathering a lot of positive comments and stating the need to provide more training opportunities.
